Procedure of the Prostate Fusion Biopsy
1. Detailed MRI Diagnostics
A detailed multiparametric MRI scan of the prostate is performed if concerning PSA levels or suspicious lumps are detected during a physical exam. We use the Biojet system for the biopsy, which requires special imaging files created by a radiologist. You can get these files from the following centers:
- Institut Frühwald, St. Pölten
- Dr. Josef Simon, Eisenstadt
- Diagnosezentrum Favoriten
- Diagnosezentrum Med22
2. Preparing for Your Biopsy
If the MRI indicates a possible tumor, a fusion biopsy will be scheduled. During a detailed consultation, I will explain the procedure to you and address any questions or concerns.
3. The Biopsy Procedure
Before your biopsy, we will guide you on stopping any blood-thinning medications if necessary. You don’t need to fast, but an enema and pain-relieving suppository will be administered about an hour before the procedure. The biopsy itself is done under local anesthesia in a sterile environment, ensuring your safety and comfort.
4. After the Biopsy
After the procedure, you’ll stay in the office for about 20 minutes and will need to empty your bladder before leaving. Please arrange for someone to take you home, as you won’t be able to drive after local anesthesia. It is normal to experience blood-tinged urine or semen for a few days following the biopsy.
5. Reviewing Your Results
The histology results from the biopsy will be available 2-3 weeks after the procedure. You can either discuss the results with me during a follow-up appointment or collect the report to review it with your specialist.
Cost of the Procedure
The total cost for the procedure, including the initial consultation, the biopsy itself, and the follow-up consultation to review your results, is 1000 euros.
