Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, refers to the persistent inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for successful sexual intercourse. The ability to lead a healthy sexual life is an important factor that affects the quality of life of a man and his partner. The concept of “normal” or “healthy” sexual function is individual for each man, or rather, each couple. The portrayal of sexual life by modern means of communication should in no way be perceived as a goal to emulate.

Erectile dysfunction is far more common than most men would assume and should not be considered something shameful. The sooner a patient seeks medical help, the more likely they are to regain joy in their love life. Causes of potency problems can be varied: stress, smoking, improper diet, obesity, mental issues such as depression, side effects of various medications, and diseases such as diabetes, hypertensive disease, and other cardiovascular diseases can accompany or cause impotence.

After a detailed medical history (special questionnaires help assess various components of sexual function), a physical examination, ultrasound, and urine and, in some cases, blood tests are conducted. During the examination, one or more diseases, symptoms of which include erectile dysfunction, may be identified.

The treatment of impotence is as diverse as its causes. Curing the cause is rarely possible, so treatment typically focuses on restoring erectile function. Fundamentally, there are non-medication treatments, oral and topical drug treatments, and surgical treatments.

Lifestyle Changes
Non-medication treatment for erectile dysfunction involves reducing risk factors for impotence through active lifestyle changes. Improving sleep quality, reducing stress, quitting smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and normalizing weight through healthy eating and physical activity not only have positive effects on potency but also improve overall well-being.

Oral Medication
If lifestyle changes do not yield sufficient results, symptomatic treatment with oral medications may be attempted. For this purpose, there are several substances, mainly differing in duration of action. Medications can be taken either on a regular basis or just before sexual activity.

Other Treatment Methods
If oral medications are intolerable or ineffective, the use of vacuum erectile devices or local drug therapy (introduction of the drug into the urethra or via intracavernosal injections) may be possible. For patients preferring a long-term solution to erectile dysfunction issues, or those who do not respond satisfactorily to medication, surgical implantation of a penile prosthesis is available. The principle of the operation involves the insertion of a hydraulic or semi-rigid implant into the cavernous bodies. Surgical treatment has the highest effectiveness of all methods for treating erectile dysfunction. My experience in this area has enabled many of my patients to restore satisfactory erectile function, even in cases where other methods were ineffective.
